For 22 years, St Mary’s in Busselton, WA has been hosting Cliff’s Kitchen. Originally a soup kitchen service, Cliff’s Kitchen has evolved over the years to become a free, two-course community lunch for people in the local area. All are welcome, with around 80 to 100 people coming along each week for a nutritious meal and an opportunity to socialise with others and form friendships.
A number of those who attend have become regulars at the community meal, and for many it is the main social outing for the week. As living costs rise, Cliff’s Kitchen ensures that each person who takes part is receiving a lovingly prepared nourishing, filling meal every week.
Each meal is planned around the produce donations received through the SecondBite partnership, and whatever produce is left is used for providing emergency food relief. St Mary’s offers emergency relief food parcels, which include fresh fruit and vegetables, twice a week for people experiencing financial trouble.
Cliff’s Kitchen is part of SecondBite’s Community Connect™ program, and collects fresh, surplus food donations from local Coles stores to support their community food activities.
