Our recipients
Each week we deliver fresh produce to over 221 community food programs. These agencies are on the front line of food poverty, without them thousands of people would go without a daily meal.
Our ‘fair go’ policy ensures that large (>400 meals per day) and small (<10 meals per day) organisations alike have access to fresh food.
Flemington Kensington Community Lunch
With more than 200 community agencies receiving food from Secondbite, rescued foods end up as delicious meals on the plates of a variety of people in the community.
We had a chat with Andrew Campbell, the cook at Flemington Kensington Community Lunch, a food program run by six Moonee Valley churches that provides a weekly free lunch to locals.
The Flemington Kensington Community Lunch serves meals to around 30 people each Monday. Andrew says that the the lunchers are mainly residents from the Flemington housing commission flats, though anyone is welcome to come along.
“They can enjoy a good quality, two-course meal, and get a chance to meet other members of the Flemington Kensington community,“ says Andrew.
When asked what their most popular dish is, Andrew replied “Hmm... that’s hard to say, but soup is always a hit and Cottage Pie is one of the favourites.“
About 90% of the meals served at the Flemington Kensington Community Lunch are made from food donated by SecondBite.
“The produce is of a high standard and gives us a wide choice of fruit, vegetables and protein. As a church group, we’d never be able to afford to produce such high-quality meals if it wasn’t for SecondBite,“ he said.
Cutting costs
Before SecondBite, agencies purchased much of their food with donated funds – often at retail prices. By saving money on their food bill, agencies can divert funds back into educational, social, recreational and outreach programs for their clients.
Choice and variety
Due to limited funds, agencies often had restricted food budgets and were sometimes left with powdered soup as a last resort. Receiving regular deliveries of fresh raw ingredients has given agencies the freedom to create wholesome, nutritious and culturally diverse menus for their clients.
